Stamford Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile Virus, Screenmobile Can Help Protect You!

The first West Nile positive mosquitoes were trapped in Connecticut this summer on July 6 and tested by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, according to the Connecticut Department of Health. The Stamford officials are urging the public to take safety precautions to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes. Stamford’s Director of Public Safety, Ted Kanowski, is telling residents to minimize exposure and to seek out and empty any standing water around their homes.

“We know that mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk. Simple measures will minimize exposure to mosquitoes, which may carry the virus.”

Some precautions to avoid mosquito bites include:

  1. Minimize outdoor exposure at dawn and dusk
  2. Be sure window and door screens are tight-fitting and in good repair
  3. Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts that are tightly woven
  4. Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors
  5. Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors

Some measures to reduce the presence of mosquitoes around the house include:

  1. Dispose of water-holding containers
  2. Drill holes in the bottom of containers, especially those used for recycling
  3. Clean clogged roof gutters
  4. Turn over objects that may trap water, such as a wheelbarrow
  5. Change water in bird baths on a weekly basis
  6. Chlorinate and clean pools and use pool covers
  7. Use landscaping to eliminate areas where water pools can collect

Most people who are infected with the virus will have a mild illness with symptoms of fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, body aches, or a skin rash. Very few people experience a severe illness of the nervous system that causes neck stiffness, disorientation, loss of consciousness, tremors, muscle weakness, and paralysis.

Along with the Zika Virus, people need to make sure they are doing everything they can to avoid mosquitoes. For more information on the West Nile Virus, click here, and on mosquito management, please contact us. You call. We Screen.
